It was just a normal Tuesday. I was taking a break from crocheting when a post from Philomena + Ruth stopped me cold. In the next few minutes I fell completely in love with Kate Funk‘s photography and her kitty sidekick, AC. I knew right away I needed to ask AC three questions…
You’ve taken on the persona of so many icons. The Abominable Snowman and Pee-wee are two of my favorites. Which do you identify with the most?
Obviously I relate more to the Abominable Snowman! People think he’s scary and mean, but he’s really just a sweetheart. And super cute and fuzzy to boot! As a sufferer of RBF I’m often misunderstood in that way. I’d say Kate Funk is the one who identifies more to Pee-wee – she’s so super weird. And always singing what she’s doing as she’s doing it. It’s a bit ridiculous.
Scary and mean? Sounds like you’re a little misunderstood. What’s a day in the life of AC like?
It’s true – the comment Kate tells me she hears most often at craft fairs is, “Your cat must hate you!” based on my expressions in the photographs. Which is far from true – she’s actually the only person that I really like.
As far as a normal day goes:
Midnight – 5:15 am: Time for exploring the house. Kate is generally in bed watching tv or sleeping. If she’s alone I’ll come hang out, but a lot of time that other dude that lives here is in the bed, too, and totally ruins our hang out time.
5:15 am: Sprinting time. Gotta get some exercise to keep my model body in tip top shape.
5:30 am: Time for my morning meal. Kate Funk seems to generally forget this and is usually sleeping so I always seem to have to wake her up. Constant meowing generally does the trick, but if that’s not working it I find sitting on her head or putting my tongue in her nose always works.
5:45 am: Kate Funk goes back to bed and I join her. She’s not so great at sharing the pillow with me, but I find if I just keep sitting on her head some more she generally takes the hint and gives me most of it. I like to leave her a little corner, though, cause I’m nice like that.
6:00 am – 5:00 pm: Sleeping time. Gotta get that beauty sleep.
5:00 pm – 8:00 pm: Follow Kate Funk around time. She always seems super busy, but I find if I just follow her around and cry she’ll pick me up and carry me all over with her. It makes things much easier for me. That way we can still hang out and snuggle, but I have to do as little work as possible. Sometimes we do clothes fittings during this time if Kate is sewing me a costume. There is generally a lot of strings and threads and fun stuff to play with while we do it so I’m totally on board. And she gives me treats every time she puts something on me. So that rules.
8:00 pm – Midnight: Back to napping. Getting carried around can get exhausting.
As far as photo shoots go that’s only about once a week. It’s always in the middle of my sleep which I find a bit bothersome, but it means I get a bunch of extra treats so it’s worth it, obviously.
Speaking of craft fairs, do you ever go with Kate Funk to meet your fans?
I did go once with her to a trunk show a long time ago back when she first started doing this. It didn’t go very well – I got nervous which made Kate nervous and she took me home after about 10 minutes. 🙁 She promised to never make me go anywhere again after that and has kept her word.
If you can’t get enough AC (who can?) check out katefunk.com, come meet Kate Funk at Strange Folk Festival this weekend, Sept. 26-27 at Union Station, St. Louis, MO, or stop by Philomena + Ruth in Waterloo, IL. I will be!
